I have an issue. I have two people telling me two different things. I have a 350 bored +.0402, 9.35:1 pistons (with 64cc chamber heads) 5.00cc piston top volume, deck height is .018, stroke is 3.480, gasket is .044 compressed. My heads are 56cc, 1.94/1.50, Z28 springs, harland sharp 1.6 roller rockers. Anyhow I used a c/r calculator and it says I will have 10.87:1 c/r. One person says I will HAVE to run racing fuel, and the other says I only have to use premium and may have to retard the timing. Please help...Which is true if either? Any help is greatly appreciated...Thank you.

If the heads are 56cc for sure list the casting numbers then yes you will need some hi-octane 104 fuel. Retarding the timing to stop detonation is just putting a band aid on it and taking the chance of ruining your engine.

casting number is 601. Is there an octane boost that could bring it up to 104? I also heard that at the elevation I'm at I may not even need to retard the timing. Elevation 3000.

The 601 heads are 58cc and have to have the combustion chamber opened up a little bigger for the 1.94 intake valves.
With a 58cc head you have a 10.57:1CR.

I measured the chambers and they are 56cc. The 601's are anywhere from 52-58cc's.

At the elevation I'm at what would the highest compression ratio that I could run pump gas and maybe some octane boost be? I was also told that if I get a good ignition system I would be ok.

I'm not to familyar with the 601 heads. But my question is, are they iron or aluminum.
With iron heads your limit is about 10.2:1 with a octain boster.. Aluminum heads your limit is about 11.3, 11.4:1 with a octain boster.
To help out you can put a shine on the pistons and combustion. that will get rid of hot spots, or get them done in a ceramic finish.

601's are 305HO iron heads  and he will need to run race fuel for any thing over 10.5:1CR
