I have been having a lot of raspy vibes coming from my front speakers on my 2002 V6 Camaro. I went on line and read where most Camaros with the optional "Monsoon Sound System" tend to blow out the front door speakers only. Since my wife is deaf, I am sure the volume hit a very high level. Both door speakers were blown out.
What to do about this? I read further that the speakers in the door have 4 wires going to them. One set is base and one set is tweeter. I further read where some expensive speakers could be purchased that bolt in, but I didn't want to spend that much money.
This is what I did.........
I first found that getting to the speakers is much easier than most of the posts said. By simply removing the 5 screws that hold on the door panel, you can lift up the door panel just enough to let the bottom pull out. Nothing further has to be taken apart. Then, simply bend out the bottom panel and you get perfect access to the door speakers!!
I then went to Walmart and found some nice Sony speakers around $90 a set. I then soldered the two base wires to the speaker and simply taped up the other two wires.
To replace one speaker this way is a 15 minute job. Once the speaker is bolted in place, the door panel simply drops back down and 5 screws later, you're done!!
I am not a super stereo friek. I want my system to work like it came from the dealer. After putting in my favorite test CD (Who Let the Dogs Out), I quickly decided my replacement speakers were 100% successful. I can use full base until the entire car is shaking!!
The base tends to be better than the original. The treble from the door is a tad less. But, with the radio cranked way up high and full base and treble applied, I have a great sound. I am confident that these 270 watt speakers will not blow out no matter how high my wife cranks them up.
