So, I'm restoring my 77 Nova, I would like to do a rear disk brake conversion on my rear end, but its kinda expensive. I was looking up parts for my Nova when I saw that they had for 600 dollars cheaper at 400 dollars a 10inch finned Drum Brake Conversion kit that came on the 75-79 Nova police cars! I was wondering if anyone knew if the Police Drum brakes would do just as well as the Disk brakes. I realize that the disk brakes are going to cool alot better, but at 600 dollars cheaper, I can't help but wonder if the drum brakes would work just as well. Besides, it looks like the Disk Conversion kit would be alittle more complicated then the Police Drum set up? Any advise will help, thank you! Oh yeah, also, am I going to have to do anything else if I decide to go with the Drums, like a bigger Mastercyclinder or Brake Booster?

there is another rear drum option... some of the mid olds cutlass rwd in the 80s had finned aluminum rear drums... with a cast iron liner... the drums should fit.. there may be a tiny gap as the pilot diameter may me slightly larger on the newer parts... i can check if you want..
the replacement drums at some of the auto parts web sites show finned cast iron drums...

Go with the drums if you're on a budget. Unless you're gonna be road racing the car, the rear drums will do just fine. On the street, the front brakes are doing more of the work than the rears, so put your money into good disc brakes for the front.
Your other option is to find a late 70s Camaro with a disc brake rear and install that in your Nova. Problem is, they can be hard to find.
