hey guys, Im the young owner of a 1972 chevelle/malibu, Im having a problem with mounting the powersteering pump aswell as the alternator, the issue? its a 1980 block and has a 1986 water pump all new, its a fully rebuilt 305 small block, with high compression pistons, edlebcok cam, and hooker darkside headers and las a edlbrock touquer single plain intake manifold, the altenator bracket doesn't fot on the intake, or the water pump am i better off to make my own bracket? or spend $500 for that fancy bracket set from summit..?

I know of 2 different long water pump styles one has a hole on the right side (you looking at the front of the engine) with no threads this is for the 70's style long pump power steering, The alternator brackets are the same for both. Ok the later style (i think this started in 83 or so) has a threaded 3/8 hole in the same location, the two will not interchange, which power steering bracket do you have? one pivots on a bolt on the front of the driver side head and the other pivots on the unthreaded hole on the waterpump. As for the intake you have one specific for a short pump set up. You will need another intake, I have had this exact trouble you are having before.

i ran the numbers on the block, the production of this block is from 1980 to 1984 and ill just go to the wrecking yard to figure out the power sterring pump issue, get a used one, the alternator unfortionatly... i need to figure out, you said get another intake? the only other one i have is the stock one, and i need to use the touquer on it for the cam... otherwise it will suck gass like crazy, but i need an altenator... i think ill make a bracket cause i can work with metal pretty well... unless anyone advise strongly against it...

The alternator is the same for short or long pump, the only difference in these old style alternators is 73 and earlier have external voltage regulators and 74 and later are internally regulated. Both will bolt to any sb or bb.
