What is up with ca smog laws?looking for someone who is somewhat knoledgable about 305tpi to 350lt1 tpi conversions. using the same fuel delivery system. what problems will i expect.i have been warned about smog laws. can such a conversion be done successfuly. i have two engines to choose from. the one we want to use is the350lti out of a 96 caprice, it is a low mile tight motor ready to go. the other motor is the original burned up 305 #2 & #7 cyl rods are gone. 157.000. should I rebuild the 305 and if i do can i cam it flat to pistons ect, will i have more smog leniancy with the 305. or should i continue trying to butter up this lt1 you guys make the call.

Ok. Got to know a little more before giving you advice on this.

What kind of car is this meant for? You mentioned 305 TPI, so I'm guessing this is a 3rd Gen Camaro?

I know the 305 loyalists are gonna give me hell here, but if you've got an LT1 that doesn't need rebuilding, but your 305 does, go with the 350 that runs good now.

Fuel pressure wise, a TPI system runs at high fuel pressure like an LT1, so you should be ok as far as the pump goes. But there are other things you have to take care of when swapping to an LT motor, because of the reverse cooling system they use.

Get me some more info on the car you want to put this in, let's go from there.

the vortec heads will not work on an lt1 without major mods. the water pasages are different. and as good as they are, they dont flow aswell as the lt1 heads. atleast locally, craigslist website offers cheap lt1 heads aswell as whole engines cheap. the factory lt1 aluminum heads work great. i have a set that have been ported and have the stock 1.94x1.50 valves that flow 262@.600 and 190 on the exhaust. which is better than most aftermarket heads. the low and midrange lift is better than almost all for the lt1. (205@.300, 232@.400, 251@.500). a good company for lt1 ported heads is total engine airflow (google search for their website). their owned by trickflow. although i do NOT have their heads, they do great work. their ported stock castings outflow the heads i have(they have flowcharts for their heads and ported aftermarket heads). IMO, they offer the best work for the *** alot of guys on the internet think they have a gold mine when they have a stock set of alum. lt1 heads. but, most stock sets can be bought for $200-300. the cast iron heads are ok. but, if you want them ported most would charge you extra. and theyre heavier. the lt1 can run higher comp. on pump gas due to the alum. heads and reverse flow cooling. as much as 12.0 to 1. my 383 lt1 in my trans am, runs 11.5 comp. on pump gas without any problems. i've done a couple of lt1 swaps. i have a 72 chevelle with an efi lt1 and an 89 chev. silverado pickup thats also efi lt1.

you'll need this intake for a carb. set up. the intakes are diff. on an lt1 and dont flow water thru the intake. of course, other intakes can be modded. http://store.summitracing.com/partdetail.asp?part=NAL%2D24502592&autoview=sku

heres total engine airflows link with flow #'s. http://www.totalengineairflow.com/products/gmhead/gmlt1/ BTW, the engine swap in either car should be easy aslong as you have the factory lt1 acess. drive (pulleys, alt. etc.) and the lt1 computer and maf (if your keeping it efi). you'll also need the lt1 engine harness or an aftermarket such as painless or howell among others. if your going to use the factory radiator for your vehicle, remember that the lt1 is reverse flow and the radiator hose going into the thermostat housing would go to the lower hose on the radiator. hope this help. its really not a hard swap.
