Ok, first off I have an 85 Monte Carlo which came with a 4.3. And about 2 years ago my father and I yanked out the six shooter and dropped in a 305 that we bought for $75 bucks. Needless to say the original tranny out lasted the 305 (no surprise there as the engine was just an impulse buy) so fast forward a year later, my father gave me a 327 for my birthday. My father has a book of casting numbers for Chevy engines from early or late 50's up to about mid 90's. Now when I looked up the casting number of the block in the book, it had three entries for the same casting number. The first two entries I believe said that the block was a 350 and the last one said 327. Now the guy that my father bought the engine off of said it was supposedly out of a 67 SS Impala. From what I've been able to read and investigate ALL Super Sports were fitted with nothing LESS than a 350. If I'm not mistaken one of the 350 entries said it was a four bolt main. Now... if I don't have the time (or means) to go ahead and crack it open how else would I be able to correctly identify the true cid of my engine? Cross referencing other casting #'s from the heads, and what not?

What is the casting number?? (heads too) 327's had the canister type oil filter. What is the suffix code? stamped in front of the passenger side head on the deck of the block.

Well it'll be a few days before I can go and take a look at my block again, as it's in a storage right now and it's currently blocked off by about... nearly 4 feet of snow drifts I MIGHT have that book here at home but I'll repost as soon as I have those #'s handy!

Ok, I got the casting # on my cylinder block which is 3932386 and in the book I was refering to (Catalog of Chevy V8's early 50's-mid 90's it has three entries for that casting #
1) 327; 68-69 Passenger, Chevelle, Camaro, Nova; Large Journal 2) 350; 69 Corvette; 300/350 HP 3) 350; 69-74 Passenger, Chevelle, Camaro, Nova, Monte; Hi Perf, 4 Bolt Mains
& as for the #'s on the passenger side head on the deck of the block... it'll be a few days before I can get into the storage to get a look at them.

The 350 and 327 used the same block, that's why you have multiple entries for this casting number.
The way to ID your displacement, look at the flange of the crankshaft. On the wide end of the flange if it has an extra counter weight, you've got a 350. If it doesn't have the counterweight, then it's a 327 crank.
