Need some advice from "seasoned" chevy men

Hey guys, This is my first post on this forum, so I'm sorry in advance for any mistakes I make in this posting. I'm planning on building a Yenko Duece clone. I know this is nothing new and that's fine- this car is for me, I love the way the real car looks and can't afford one. So I'll build my own. In any event, my question is- what was the original LT1 like? Was it reliable, stable or did it need a tune up every time you ran it? I had read an article years ago about this engine and I don't think it was too flattering, something about overheating I think. I don't remember what magazine it was in either. I wanted to talk to some people that actually ran the engine everyday. I know that I can build a stronger engine these days for cheaper than it costs to find and build a real LT1. But I'd like to make that choice with the facts. Thanks again for reading this, I'm looking forward to your comments!

You can build a 383 for the same price makes great torque and no one will no the difference but you.

True on the 383 comment, you wouldn't be able to tell displacement from the outside.
The original LT1s were great motors and very streetable without a ton of constant work. You can substitute a modern hydraulic roller cam in place of the factory LT1 cam that'll make life even easier.

I like the 383 idea, I've seen a lot of good deals on crate engines in Summit and Pace catalogues. I also want to have some fun balancing and blueprinting this engine as well. I figure it's my first build, I use precision instruments all day long at work, might as well put those skills to good use at home as well. My collegues at work tell me I'm crazy to even consider building the vintage engine, that I can build a 400 hp engine for what it costs for just the core LT1. I can put a gear drive system on any 350/383 setup as long as it doesn't use a knock sensor right? How loud is such a set up really? Too obnoxious for the street, or is it only on long drives does it get too noisy? Thanks again for your thoughts!
