I need some help troubleshooting this problem. First of all its an 1986 corvette L98 engine TPI. The car simply wont start but rather sounds like its going to start but clicks. The distributor cap is new, the engine is good, its got new spark plug wires. If you guys can help me out where to start it would be greatly appreciated. If you need more info just ask and i'll try to answer with the best of my abilities.

have you checked the wire that goes to the starter solenoid to see if it has come lose.

thats a real good suggestion right there. That'll save me some cash if it is that, didnt think about that at all. I supected it was somewhere in the starter but wasnt sure it if it was the solenoid or the starter itself but i'll check that wire. thx alot. any other suggestions anyone?

The solenoid may be stuck too if the wires are good and  it is still not working try tapping on it with a hammer or other hard object.

Pull the battery out, take it to you local auto parts store and have it load tested, it sounds like you've got a bad battery. If the battery's good, I'd suspect the cables need to be replaced. The clicking you hear is the solenoid trying to engage, but not enough power getting to the starter motor to turn.

The battery is new and its not the solenoid i ohmed it out as well as the cables no shorts, has good ground and power going through it. I've heard that the timing chain could also be what may keep it from starting is there any truth to that?

Yeah, that would definitly cause starting problems. Have you tried turning the engine with a socket wrench on the crankshaft bolt? If this turns, and your in question about the timing chain take the dist cap off and turn the engine by hand and that would be obvious. Also, have you  checked the small wire on the solenoid (the one close to the block) to make sure that you have 12V with someone holding the keyswitch in the start position. If the armature is burnt up the starter may engage to the flywheel but not have enough torque to turn the engine, no mater how many amps you throw at it. Are the battery cables getting hot real quick when trying to start it? The bad thing about weak starters is they may test ok on a testing machine because they dont put the load of the engine on it. I have had this happen with cheap AZone parts and had to argue to get an exchange. It probably has that GM high torque starter and they are kind of expensive, I recommend having the original rebuilt, this will be a lot cheaper than buying one. Let us know what happens.

Well i havent messed around with the chain nor tried to turn it by hand. I try to start the car and it sounds like it wants to start but it doesnt. Soon after i stop it i hear a click then about 5 to 10 secs later i hear another click. Also i got a "service engine soon" light come on. So do you really think it may be the timing chain or that wire going to the block or could it be something else??

You said you hear more clicks when you stop trying to start the car. This sounds like the fuel pump relay. after you turn the key to the on position it should click this is the fuel pump relay. have you tried bleeding the shrader valve on the fuel rail to make sure that the engine is getting good fuel pressure?

Yeah haha.. I have absolutely no fuel pressure. I cleaned out my pump and i was trying to start the car again but i went back to pull it out. As soon as i took off i noticed the lines they were all bone dry. Turns out there was a clog in my fuel lines at the fuel pump so i cleaned those out using wd-40 a wire hangar and some air pressure. Tried it again nothing turns out there are more clogs from the half-way connections to the fuel filter and possibly more after the filter. Is there anyway to take out those clogs like a chemical thats breaks em down? because i spent about three hours trying to loosen it up with a wire and wd-40 before i blew some air in it because the pressure wasnt enough even at 75psi.

Have you removed the inline fuel filter? 75psi is more than enough to clean out fuel lines, dont blow the lines out with the fuel pump hooked up this could damage it, if you force air through the pump. Are you sure that the fuel pump was running? You should hear it inside the tank.

Yeah i removed the filter, i didnt blow air through it with the pump on it was the first thing i took off. I know that the pump is working because when i removed it and flipped it upside down fuel spilled out. Also the second time i started up the car to check my lines, before i found the other clog of course, the lines had fuel in it all the way to the half way mark, i also disconected a line and saw fuel pumping out. and the 75 psi is not enough coming out of a 2 gallon air tank i learned that the hard way. thats why i want to know if there is anything that could possibly loosen up or if possible break down that gunk before i spend about 200 or more for a bigger tank im trying to spend as little as possible, salvage those parts, and make good use of the money than buying something i will only use once and waste my money. I would deeply appreciate it if you can find something out there that can break it down or something or know of something that can do that, if not i guess tough luck for me especially my wallet, not saying i dont got the money to do it, but i just rather spend that money on something else like feeding my inner fat kid with ice cream or something...

Well i almost got my engine to run... My fuel pump was bad so i changed it and now its getting good fuel pressure, but i still got one more problem. It wants to start now but it sputters and it blew out confetti out of one of my mufflers. Seriously there was an easter egg in it, probably one of my nieces did that but what would anybody suggest now that it could be??

You say it sputters so I assume that it didnt start? Is the gas good? Have you made sure the plugs are not fouled? Have you tried to get it to run with starting fluid? Easter egg in the exhaust!!!!? how long has this thing been sitting? I found a bunch of mice in the glove box in one of my trucks one time.
