in 86, auto trans was the only thing you could get. I live in california. would I have any issues with smog inspection since it wasnt available.

I have seen man trannys in these cars. The only cars that the 5 speed wasnt installed was the 350 cars because the light duty trans would not tolerate the power of the 350. The trans will take it as long as you take it easy, no drag strip or sticky tires. The T56 trans is a better option. The emissions are not effected.

The trans shouldn't affect your smog numbers, so it'll be safe to swap in.
Now, to do the swap, you'll need the pedal assembly out of any stick equipped 3rd Gen F-body. From there you need to find a V-8 stick donor car to get the trans crossmember from, and the driveshaft. The torque arm might be different too, I'd also grab that.
