Hey everybody just looking for some comments i have a 400 in a 81 z well that is the block, cubes have changed due to work done i had someone aproach me with a what they called a 377. its a 400 block with 350 crank used with spacers and a 12:5:1 compression piston my car runs in the low 11 second area now but i am bieng told this motor combo would produce more power then my 408 and should drop my times into the mid 10,sec class. any thoughts on this.

thanks

Well, you'll have a shorter stroke so you can turn more RPMs.

Not sure about what kind of power your 408 makes.  What kind of compression do you have?  What kind of heads?  If you got flat top pistons and factory heads then the 377 probably will make more power then your 408.

But yeah, there is such a thing (377).  They call that "D-stroked".

Haven't seen that combo in a lot of years but if memory serves me right they revved like hell but had a bad wear problem on the cylinders, rings, pistons. And always remember the golden rule thier's only one replacement for displacement and thats more of it.

I dissagree, a shorter stroke in a heavy car is not the way to go. Torque is what gets the car off the line not high rpm. I consider this combo only for a lite low gear car, but most likely never.

Well, he's already got a 408 and runs in the low 11s (according to his first post).  His friend suggested the 377.  Sounds like he's more interested in improving his ETs and not his car's streetability.  With the right torque converter and gear, the shorter stroke wouldn't be a handicap.  And if his 408 is mild, then he could improve his times with the 377.

So again, how much power or alteast what kind of work has been done to the 408?
