WHAT SIZE IS A PISTON SUPPOSE TO BE FOR A 327 BORED 40 OVER? SEE I BOUGHT SOME FEDERAL MOGUL PISTONS FROM SUMMIT AND WHEN I GOT THEM, I PUT THEM IN THE CYLINDER WITH OUT RINGS AND THERE WAS A LOT OF PLAY. IM NOT SURE IF IT IS SUPPOSE TO BE LIKE THAT. THE MACHINE SHOP SUPPOSED TO HAVE BORED IT 040. OVER BUT WHEN IN CHECKED THE CYLINDER WITH A (CHEAP)DIGITAL CALIPER. IT READ 4.0375 ISNT IT SUPPOSE TO BE 4.040. MAYBE ITS JUST THE CHEAP CALIPER. HOPE SO..ANY INFO FOR ME..

i take it that they had the pistons before they bored the block....
got a feeler gauge... put the pistons in the bore upside down.. see how much feeler gauge you can get in and still move the piston freely..
you do have to have some clearance between the piston and the cylinder wall.. and that distance varies with piston design, engine usage, machinist preferences..
measure it at the top of the skirt... not at the ring lands..
i hate to say this... when i worked in an engine rebuilding shop... the standards in the dial bore gauge were worn... they had dents in the ends... it threw off all kinds of measurements... like press fit for cylinder sleeves... they did one block... that the sleeves fell in... the machinist was new.. and did not last.. but the tooling was wrong also... the tool companys reps jaw fell open when i showed how bad it was warn...
check you PM....

The correct .040 over bore for the 327 should be 4.040, But, with your caliper thats only two and a half thousands, about the thickness of a hair, small. Asfar as the pistons measure them too. If you are building engines I would recommend investing in good measureing tools. They are very important, be sure to check the ring gaps for every cylinder W/ a feeler gauge.

Don't you also have to account for the rings? They'll add diameter to the piston.

You need a good set of 8" calipers for the pistons, and a good bore gauge for checking the cylinder bores.
