I have a 1970 Chevelle, and i have access to a 1993 caprice (cheap), it has a disk brake 10 bolt in it(the chevelle is a 10 bolt also) the question is will it fit in the chevelle? are these rears worth using? How much trouble is the swap? I want to know before I buy or trade for the car, I have not made any measurements yet.

I dont think it is worth your trouble to swap rears simply to have disk brakes. and the gear ratio is probably wrong for your Chevelle. If your intent on doing the swap, most rears that I have measured are roughly 54in. backing plate to backing plate. Take measurements, like you said earlier before you find out hidden surprises later.

NO! NO! NO!
DON'T DO THIS SWAP!
That 10-bolt in the Caprice is piss weak. You're better off beefing up the current 10-bolt in your Chevelle, it has a bigger and stronger ring gear than the Caprice 10-bolt.
For the other post, Any A-body 12-bolt rear will bolt right into your Chevelle.

Yes, I believe the disk brake hardware will bolt to your existing rear.

both are 8.5 rears w/open carrier, whats so weak about it? it has 3:42 gears. my chevelle is mild mannered 350 with about 300 HP, 4 speed trans and 3:08 gear. My car is a weekend ride with some street abuse 255/50 15 on 8 inch ralleys. I just want to be sure before I pass up the chance. I am no different from the rest of us on a budget, I cant afford the goooooood stuff.

I hear you on the tight budget. Is the disk brakes all your after, or do you want the 3:42 gears as well? If just the brakes, then buy the rear and swap the brakes. If your after the whole package, then it would be easiest to swap the whole rear. Your not going to hurt it with 300hp.

Ok I got the rear (free) so pretty much nothing to lose here. The caprice has ABS, I know the disk drum prop valve wont work. Will a typical disk ft rr valve work like one from master pwr brakes? Plus I think this will look great behind the torq thrust D wheels im saving up for.
