Just transplanted a early 90's 350 into my 64 sportside. Installed a brand new HEI set up & I am running into a little confusion on the timing/distributor.
I got TDC (I think) & got the distributor in with the rotor pointing at #1 cylinder (about 5:30 clock position). The only way I can get the motor to fire up is with the distributor rotated as far counterclockwise (advanced?) as I can do it. I have hit the firewall. Spinning it the other way just pops & backfires.

I think the motor needs a little more timing (advance) to run right. How do I do it when I can't turn the cap anymore? The motor will start but it's still not right, getting close though!

Pick the distributor out and back it up a tooth. Get it fired up, hook up your timing gun and with vaccum disconnected, set the timing at 10deg. BTDC.
