what is the difference between regular 350 chevy engine and a 350 vortec engine?

Vortec refers to the head design, specifically the combustion chamber shape. Essentially a Vortec head has an LT1 style combustion chamber, but doesn't use the reverse flow cooling like an LT1 head. They have excellent flow and make great power, even in iron form.

Earlier 350s used an open-type combustion chamber that didn't have as high compression as the LT1 that were ok performers.
