Stock oil pump with heavy duty shaft. Pulled the distributor and all looks good, nothing loose or broken. Played with the timing, no change still knocks. Did some testing with a vaccum gauge, all checks good. Still sounds like the back r/h side top, but cant isolate.

One last thing I can think of is crossfire. Do you have #4-#8 wires away from each other? Same with #5-#7. Firing order is correct (18436572)? Pull #6-#8 plugs out of the motor, rev to whatever RPM it starts to knock at? Take a good hard look at the #6-#8 valves while running up to RPM range. How is the power output of the motor?

Thinking about pulling the intake and replacing all the lifters. I wish there was a way to troubleshoot a individual lifter.

A lifter wont knock, it will tick. Try what I said about running up to speed, without valve cover. Get a .020 feeler gauge and sneek it between rocker and valve on suspected ones. See if any change in sound.

Stuck a .020 feeler gauge between rocker and valve while running, no difference in sound. Going to pull the oil pan. Maybe I will see something there.

Dropped the pan. Nothing loose, no sign of wear. No metal in oil. I'm about a half a second from junking this piece of crap. Anybody interested in a very nice camaro with a misterious knock?

While your in the oil pan, look for a broken piston skirt on 6 or 8.

It wont hurt at this point to pull the head of the suspicious bank and pull your 6-8 pistons out to have a look. While your pulling the intake you can have a look at those lifters. If you get the piston(s) out and find play in the wristpins, you may as well pull them all and deal with the potential problem of others soon to fail. I hope you find something less substantial along the way.  JW.

I built a 350-30 over back in 2000, installed ohio pistons from Napa. Never could get it to run right. Changed out the cam, same problem. It never made it to the road since I was deployed. Last month, while on leave, found the same problem you are having. #6 cyclinder. Had to pull the right side down to find #6 piston had a crack around the wrist pin, and up around the oil ring. It had the same sound that you were talking about. As the previous guy mentioned, check the wrist pin. I thought the noise was a lifter also but unfortunaly dug in and found the problem. Good luck.

Finally got around to pulling the #6 piston. Piston, wrist pin, rod and bearing all good. Still dont have a clue why this thing has a knock. And it gets louder when you take away the spark at the #6 cylinder. The search goes on.

Quigley:
84 Camaro 400ci. 5 speed manual. Just rebuilt the motor, now got a knock. Oil pressure is good  at idle and under power. Checked lifters, rockers and pushrods. The knock is not there at idle, 2000 rpm and higher. Also gets louder as rpm gets higher. Used a stethascope and cant locate the noise. Anybody have a idea as to troubleshooting the noise? Also does it when motor is cold or hot.
Thanks Quigley

Its a 5 speed manual. If I had a cracked flex plate, how would that make the #6 cylinder knock?
