Hey, good luck to you man. Just today I had my 81 camaro towed to my house to start the restoration project. 81 is a special year for it's the last year of the second generation model. Anyway, best of luck to you.

being from so cal also... one neat thing about 81 up gm cars... they were computer controlled... and if some planning is done ... and some proper junkyard searching......
well what i am trying to tell you is that you can upgrade your computer and it's wiring to 1987 to get better fuel economy.. or even TBI... as they all use the same hole in the firewall for the harness to pass through... there is only one drawback... if you decide to go to a computer controlled 350 motor... you need a computer controlled 350 carb... as most came with 305's and those primary needles are too lean for the computer to command rich... i don't know if there are replacement feed back primary needles and jets for the 350's... but i do know... that cads in 1981 cam with a 368 (6.0L) with a feed back carb here in california... they have the proper jetting for a little warmed over 350... and still allow the computer to control it...
buy the whole cad carb... dont just rob it of parts... as you might be able to mix and match the later parts onto the earlier carb to get the proper feedback mixture.. if you bend the primary needles they will not work ... the do bounce at 10 cycles per second... the ecm commanding them to stay down longer than up to lean the mixture out... and up more than down to richen up the mixture...
the green connector next to the carb harness with a dwell meter attached and in 6 cyl scale.. if the carb is ajusted properly it will idle at 28 to 35 degrees of dwell.... this is a complacated carb... not easy to ajust... but doable.. with some understanding... and a few specialized tools..
