Somebody mentioned on these pages that they were considering emptying their trunk of unnecessary stuff that just adds weight—and miles per gallon—to their ride. The author wondered how much savings folks could enjoy with a hundred pounds or so removed from the car. A couple of reliable Web sources, including Edmond's, claim an extra 100 pounds of weight can reduce your miles per gallon by up to 2 percent. The reduction is based on the percentage of extra weight relative to the vehicle's weight and it supposedly affects smaller vehicles more than larger ones. Two of the articles I looked at said removing 100 pounds could result in savings of between 3 to 6 cents a gallon—and that was based on an assumed fuel price of $2.78 a gallon, which was back in the olden days!
