Anyone have any experience with installing any of the new aftermarket rack & pinion units? I have a big block 68 Camaro and I have been looking at non-power units from Flaming River - Steeriods - Unisteer. Looking for some suggestions etc....

Thanks

I also have a 67 Camaro with a big block. I purchased the Unisteer manual rack. The rack installs easy but the steering column linkage is a *** I have the Hooker Super Comp headers 2 1/8 tubes. I called Unisteers tech support and finally found out they used the Patriot 1 3/4 tubed headers for their mock up. I haven't purchased new headers yet. The U-joints bind because of the sharp angles. From what I read about the other racks the problems are worst. If you don't have a automatic trans it gets worst. Check out Team Camaro forum it has more info.

Thanks for the intel - I'm hearing the same regarding the headers. I have the same Hooker headers in mine. Guess I'll keep shopping and asking first.

I installed a power rack from Unisteer. the rack installion was easy. The big block shaft kit did not fit and I had to order additional shaft, universal and support bearing. I'm a design engineer and there is no way the big block steering shaft kit could work with out severe binding. After I got the unit in and drove it the first week the unisteer power steering pump was leaking. I traced the leak to a washer that was installed at the factory. It had a deep scratch across the face that allowed fluid to run out. I had to grind the spacer on a surface grinder to remove the groove. Shortly there after the rack started leaking internally. I had to remove the rack and return it to Unisteer. Now two weeks later and still waiting for answers. . customer sevice responce is very poor will never use their product again, I'm actually thinking about reinstalling the original steering box.

All I can say about Unisteer manual rack is stay away if you have a BBC with large tube headers (Hookers on mine).  Design is poor.  No matter how many ujoints or mounting angles for bracket there is severe binding.  Stay away.  No help from the folks at Unisteer.  They sent pics of customer install and redesign of bracket mounting.  Looked good in pics but there was no engine in the car.  Wondering what happened after this fellow installed the engine.  Unisteer needs to go back to the drawing board.  Angle of the pinion is all wrong.  Instructions included with unit are crap.  Save you money!!

I have a 69 with BBC and Hooker headers. The ad I saw said works with Big Block, but nothing about which header you have to use. Like those above the rack installed with no problems. Come time to install the steering shafts and there is no way in hell. Called Uni-steer tech they said "You might need another u-joint to make it work and you have to play with the support bearing to make it work". Layed under my car 2 evenings trying to figure out how to make it work before boxing it up and shipping it back to Jegs.

Save yourself a couple of evening and return shipping and buy a factory quick ratio box.
