I was wondering what the max hp you can run with a stock block? I want to twin turbo my 383 with complete forged assembly. One guy from a shop told me the max a stock block can handle is 500hp. Is this true or can I run more? Anyone know?

thanks

alot depends on what your stock block is. 2 or 4 bolt main? old casting or a newer one? you need to provide more information.

67,68,69,70 blocks are the ones I prefer. An 010 block from the same vintage Vette would be good. I've used these blocks for up to 650 horsepower with no problems. I wouldn't worry about factory 4 bolt mains. I prefer to use a 2 bolt and then drill it for spayed caps. I wouldnt go over .030 over if you plan on using a turbo.

sorry about that. Four bolt main, Billet caps, .30 over, and it is an old  high nickel block. thanks for the help. Just dont know if I wanna drop the cash on aftermarket block if I dont have too. I like to drive it but take it to the strip here and there. The guy at the machine shop had told me that even with a high nickel block it wouldnt hold over 500hp and then the block would probally crack. Sounded like he was trying to sell me an aftermarket block more then anything. What do you think?

I wouldn't worry about 750 horses out of a stock 350 010 block. I ran an almost identical block for 15 seasons with 13.1 compression, buzzing it 8600 rpms at the finish line. I ran every weekend, after 7 seasons the block had to have the mains aligned bored but really didn't show any other signs of problems. Again horsepower was around 650-700. I simply replaced bearings and rings every 2 seasons. I think your right someone wants to sell you an aftermarket block. I'm now running a 408 with a stock block which makes about 700 horses, but it is filled to within 1 inch of the deck.

I wouldn't go over 550HP on a stock block.

If you use block filler it may last a while, but I aggree with the 550hp limit.
