I'm changing over from chain to gear drive. What is a cam button?

A Camshaft button rides between the end of the camshaft and the timing cover to aid in keeping pressure on the camshaft so it does not walk forward.

With a gear drive, I didn't think you needed a cam button?

The main function of the cam button is when you go from a flat tappet cam to a roller. With a roller cam, the camshaft wants to "walk" forward as it turns. The button keeps the cam in place by pressing against the inside of the timing cover to keep the cam from moving. With a flat tappet cam, the spinning motion of the lifters helps keep the cam in place.

Just curious, why are you switching to a gear drive? What's the motor in?

Its a 84 Camaro. My kid wants that blower sound. Having a *** of a time puting the timing cover back on. Is there a trick to this? Do i need to drop the oil pan slightly? Cant get it to go back on.

i had a pete jacksons gear drive on my motor it was done at a machine shop and i think he had to do a little grinding to make it fit. If i was u i would ask a machine shop or  the company of the gear drive.

The problem I'm having is the bottom of the cover where the rubber seal sits on top of the oil pan. You have to push down and compress the rubber seal in order for the cover to slide in. I cant push it down far enough. I think I will loosen the front of the oil pan and hopefully the pan will drop down far enough for me to slide the timing cover on.

Yes, you will need to losen the oilpan bolts(three or four on each side), then, wedge a screwdriver straight into each side to spread the pan from the block. Be carefull not to tear your gaskets. With these bolts run out a ways, the pan will drop just enough to insert the lower edge of the cam cover into position, then push the top of the front cover into position. You will need to apply a fair amount of sealant to the corners to insure against leakage.
