I have a 283 and the crank has not bolt hole..the balancer is just press fitted on..I cannot find an installer that doesn't use the crank bolt hole to install the balancer...any suggestions on how to install the balancer without tapping a bolt hole in the crank?

Yep, the old cranks used a straight press fit on the balancer.

I'll do some digging, but as far as I know, the best thig to do is put a think film of oil on the crank snout, and using a wide enough drift tap the balancer onto the crankshaft.

Let me check my early model restoration manuals and see what I can come up with for a more definite answer.
