I have a chevy 396 block that i got out of a 1969 chevelle i realy dont have a use for it and was just wondering what the block might be worth & where a good place  to sell it.I bought the block to put in my 1969 comaro but decided not to change from a small block to a big block . The block # is 3855961 with a date code of 1285

To better help you out, can you post the correct date code? 1285 isn't what you're ooking for. It should be a letter with three digits after, the letter telling what month the block was cast, the next two what day, the last digit what year.

It must be an I285 . It is hard to read it is on the side of the block under the freeze plug. Instead of being on the bell housing.

That would mean your block was cast on Sept. 28, 1965, making it a VERY early production block.

Where are you located at?

Talking to people I know, it's tought o pin down a value, but all  the numbers I've heard are around $5000, if you've got the main caps and the block is in good shape and hasn't been bored out severely.

The block is bored .30 over. The mains are still in the engine. When i took the engine apart it had a rod bearing spun. I have had This engine for about 3 years. It has been stored inside.I guees i realy need to take it to the machine shop and have it checked. Thanks for all your help.I would still be interested in selling the block. I am restoring a 1940 chevy coupe and that would sher help finish the project. Thanks again for your help.

No sweat. Good luck selling it, I'm sure you'll find a buyer!
