I have a 96 Caprice police/taxi,LT1, a former Pasadena,(TX)P.D. car with less than 80,000 miles, and only $2,000 (auction). I am told it has "THE POLICE PACKAGE", but need to sort through the fairy tales and the B.S. offered by the "self proclaimed experts" I am (re)searching information on rebuilding it, and not getting very much. I am thinking about LT1-383 stroker, with some type of gear splitter,(high-low range)the best of both worlds (maybe?). The only difference(s) that I can find between the police/taxi, and the Impala SS other than cosmetics, suspension height, and green hoses, is the police/taxi has an engine oil cooler, that looks just like the trans cooler, opposite the trans cooler. I will have 4-bolt mains adapted if it is a 2 bolt. I am not looking for supercharger, or a NOS system. I am wanting a very streetable car with 94 oct, pump gas. OH, and uh, "NO BLING PLEASE"
Now a hundred questions. At the wheels, how much stock BHP? I looked on the chevrolet site and could only find 260 bhp for the police/taxi, and the SS, they did not specify as to where it was measured, if this is what 260bhp feels like, then I can't imagine yet, what 450bhp (would be great) feels like. I always wondered how the police caught up so quickly. How much stock foot pounds of torque?
What can I do with the LT1 w/o the stroker kit? (with $3,000/$4,000/ $5,000) (from 'I'ntake to 'E'xhaust) Hardware? Software? BHP? FTLBS? RPMs? What are the pros and cons of the stroker kit? If I take the LT1 383 stroker route, (with $3,000/$4,000/ $5,000) (from 'I' to 'E') Hardware? Software? BHP? FTLBS? RPMs? I am currently deployed over seas, in Iraq, you might be amazed at the number of 94-96, Chevy Caprice police/taxi's over here, (I suspect also with LT1's)
